Quantifying Sprinting in Team Field Sports: A Narrative Review of Biomechanical Insights, Performance Demands, and Physical Development Strategies

ABSTRACT Sprinting and acceleration underpin key moments in field-based team sports, yet their development and assessment require nuanced understanding across biomechanics, physiology, sport-specific demands, and injury risk. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence to provide an integrated perspective on sprint and acceleration performance. Biomechanically, effective force application, particularly in the horizontal direction, combined with reduced ground contact times, supports optimal sprint development. Physiologically, repeated sprint training imposes high metabolic demands and can drive aerobic and neuromuscular adaptations, provided recovery is adequate. Sprint and acceleration profiles vary markedly by sport, position, sex, and level, highlighting the need for context-specific conditioning and monitoring strategies. Technological approaches including global positioning systems, timing gates, and radar offer varying advantages for quantifying sprint performance but must be implemented consistently to ensure validity. Injury risk is elevated during high-speed efforts, especially in underprepared athletes or those with fluctuating workloads, reinforcing the importance of progressive exposure and individualized programming. The review concludes with practical strategies to improve sprint performance and mitigate injury, advocating for the integration of biomechanical, physiologic, and contextual considerations to inform evidence-based training interventions in team field sports.
