Kungur addresses of the Vakhitovs

One of the cultural heritage sites of the Kungur city (Perm Krai) is known as the “Merchant Vakhitov’s Mansion.” For a long time, it was believed that it was the house where Mullanur Vakhitov, a famous Tatar public figure and revolutionary, was born. His ancestors, who came from the village of Agryz in the Agryz volost of the Sarapul district of the Vyatka province, settled on the Kungur land in the 1860s. Their main occupation was the trade in manufactured goods. It is known that the Vakhitovs, and later their relatives the Ibatullins, rented space in the city’s main store, Gostinyy Dvor, to sell their goods. The Vakhitovs owned real estate in Kungur, acquired mainly in the 1870s. They rented out some of the buildings that were part of their estate on the banks of the Sylva River, which had previously belonged to the Khlebnikov merchants. They also kept tenants, among whom was the clergyman E.D. Zolotov, who left interesting memoirs about life “with the Tatar Vakhitovs.” Recently, we were able to find archival information about the previously unknown Kungur estate of the Vakhitovs on the former Shavkunovskaya Street, of which only a one-story stone house remains to this day. The third mansion, whose owners included the Vakhitovs, albeit briefly, is located in the center of Kungur, where in the 19th century a ferry crossing and a temporary bridge across the Sylva River were situated. Thus, it can be concluded that the architectural heritage of Kungur, associated with the lives of the Vakhitovs and their relatives, the Ibatulins, is much more extensive than indicated in reference books on the city’s memorial buildings, which have the status of cultural heritage sites.
