The Role of Schools in Child Protection and Preventing Child Marriage in Bangladesh

ABSTRACT This study examined the role of secondary schools and madrasahs in child protection (CP) and preventing child, early and forced marriage (CEFM) in Tazmuddin Upazila, Bhola District, Bangladesh. Using qualitative methods, including focus group discussions with students and key informant interviews with teachers, parents and officials, the study found that although students were aware of CEFM, their understanding of its consequences was limited. Teacher discussions on CEFM focused primarily on legal aspects, and parents and community members were seen as key actors in prevention efforts. Students expressed a willingness to report CEFM cases, and parents emphasized the need for schools to raise awareness and ensure accurate birth registration. The findings highlight the need for better CEFM education in schools and the involvement of various stakeholders in prevention efforts, providing insights for CP and education experts globally.
