This paper examines how empirical research can function as a design tool within architectural practice. It treats expected human response as an object of inquiry during design formation and frames response as a situated evaluative process shaped through perception, appraisal, bodily orientation, action, and context. Drawing on neuroaesthetics and appraisal-based accounts of human–environment relations, the paper develops empirical research–integrated design (ERID) as a recursive process in which design constructs research conditions, response traces are interpreted as evidence, and evidence returns to architectural judgment as material for revision. The paper further considers how documented project-based inquiries might contribute to a cumulative infrastructure for architectural knowledge.
