ABSTRACT A low‐loss compact substrate integrated suspended line (SISL) monopulse antenna is proposed in this paper. A monopulse comparator and a symmetric antenna array are implemented in a multilayer SISL air‐cavity to minimize dielectric and radiation losses while providing strong field confinement and self‐packaging. The overall antenna size is 6.4λ 0 × 3.4λ 0 × 0.17λ 0 (λ 0 is wavelength at 35 GHz). The proposed SISL monopulse antenna has been fabricated and tested. The measured gain at 35 GHz is 8.3 dBi, achieving a null depth better than 30 dB and the gain ratios between the sum and difference pattern below 3.6 dB. A return loss better than 10 dB is maintained over 34–36 GHz. These results indicate that the proposed SISL monopulse antenna is suited for compact monopulse tracking systems.
