Infrared Photobiomodulation as a Theoretical Modulator of Bone Growth and Fracture Healing

Infrared photobiomodulation (PBM) has gained increasing attention as a non-pharmacological modality capable of influencing cellular metabolism, vascular dynamics, inflammation, and tissue regeneration. While its effects on soft-tissue repair are well documented, its potential role in modulating bone biology and accelerating fracture healing remains an emerging area of investigation. This manuscript presents a comprehensive scientific framework connecting infrared light exposure to bone biology, emphasizing mitochondrial signaling, osteoblast activity, angiogenesis, extracellular-matrix formation, and biomechanical remodeling. The aim is to establish a conceptual foundation for future research in optical-based bone-regeneration strategies and to highlight the mechanistic pathways through which infrared PBM may support bone repair.
