Formal descriptions of MASS Operational Envelope and Operational Design Domain

Abstract The IMO MASS code is expected to be approved as a voluntary code at MSC 111 in 2026. The code is high-level and goal-based and has few direct technical requirements and guidance for equipment and system designers. With an expected increase in MASS deployment, the industry, through the International Organisation for Standardisation, is working on standards and specifications that cover the practical and more detailed aspects of MASS design and verification, and that also will add some additional features that are not part of the MASS code. This paper describes the key content, concepts and principles of the ISO 25922 standard proposal and its relationship to the MASS code. Topics that are addressed include a framework for division of responsibilities between human and automation, and guidance on how voyages can be generalized into mission patterns to systematically define structured ship control tasks and MASS functionality requirements. The purpose is to contribute to clarity and consistency in descriptions of 1) The automation system’s operational limitations; 2) What party is in control at any point in time, ROC crew or automation; 3) Avoidance of out-of-the-loop problem when crew needs to take over control from automation; and 4) The actual hand-over process. A practical framework proposal on how to divide documentation requirements between individual equipment and systems on MASS is also included.
