A Prospective observational study to assess short term results on ACL with MCL reconstruction in Danish technique

Background: Combined Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) and Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) injuries are less common but challenging, often causing persistent knee instability. Single-stage reconstruction addressing both ligaments may improve functional outcomes and reduce rehabilitation time.Objective: To evaluate the clinical and functional outcomes of single-stage ACL and MCL reconstruction using the Danish technique.Materials and Methods: In this prospective observational study, 23 patients (mean age 29.7 ± 6.7 years) with combined ACL and MCL injuries underwent arthroscopic ACL reconstruction with semitendinosus and gracilis autograft and MCL reconstruction with autologous semitendinosus. Functional outcomes were assessed using Lysholm knee scores and IKDC score pre and post operatively. Complications were also recorded.Results: Among the 23 patients included in the study, both functional outcome measures showed marked improvement during follow-up. The mean Lysholm knee score increased from 54.30 +/- 9.43 pre-operatively to 90.26 ± 7.62 at 6 months and 92.26 ± 7.85 at 1 year, corresponding to a 73.45% improvement. The mean IKDC score also improved from 28.56 ± 3.95 pre-operatively to 74.94 ± 4.17 at 6 months and 77.90 ± 5.10 at 1 year, corresponding to a 174.32% improvement. The difference between pre-operative and post-operative scores was found to be highly statistically significant on paired comparison (p = 0.001). RMANOVA further demonstrated a statistically significant change in scores across the different follow-up intervals.Conclusion: The surgical intervention resulted in significant and sustained functional improvement in patients, with both Lysholm and IKDC scores showing progressive postoperative gains up to 1 year. The findings support the effectiveness of the procedure in improving knee function.
