Knowledge and practice regarding antenatal care and its effect on maternal and neonatal outcome among postnatal mothers admitted in a selected hospital of West Bengal

Background: The key component of maternal health care is antenatal care (ANC), which ensures safe pregnancy and childbirth. Maternal and neonatal complications can be reduced by adequate knowledge and good practice among women. Aims and Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge and practice regarding ANC and its effect on maternal and neonatal outcomes among postnatal mothers. Materials and Methods: An observational descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 93 postnatal mothers in a selected hospital in West Bengal from February 2026 to March 2026. Data were collected using validated tools and analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistic test. Results: About 50.54% of postnatal mothers had average knowledge regarding ANC, whereas 30.11% had good knowledge. The majority (51.61%) showed average ANC practices. A statistically significant association was found between knowledge level and age (χ2=6.84, P=0.033) and educational status (χ2=12.36, P=0.015). The majority of neonates were born with normal birth weight and at term gestational age. Conclusion: Adequate knowledge regarding ANC has played a significant role in postnatal mothers’ adherence to ANC practices and contributes to promoting maternal and neonatal outcomes. Strengthening health education and counseling is crucial during antenatal visits to improve safe motherhood.
