Gall midges (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) of Papua New Guinea: new taxa and key to genera

Seventeen new, formally named, and six new unnamed species, as well as eight new genera of gall midges (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) are described from a tropical montane forest, and two new genera are erected for species previously described from a tropical lowland forest of Papua New Guinea. Larvae of all new species feed on plants and induce galls. Taxonomic descriptions are based on morphology, biology, and for most species also on COI sequences. The following new species and genera are described: Asphondylia kosondong sp. nov. feeding on Homalanthus nervosus (Euphorbiaceae), Clinodiplosis suvidiongi sp. nov. on Mussaenda ferruginea (Rubiaceae), Dichorhopalomyia gen. nov. (Lasiopteridi: Dasineurini), Dichorhopalomyia yanhi sp. nov. on Macaranga strigosa, Macaranga bifoveata and Macaranga sp. (Euphorbiaceae), Dichorhopalomyia sp. 1 on Macaranga novoguineensis, Dichorhopalomyia sp. 2 on Macaranga novoguineensis, Dichorhopalomyia sp. 3 on Macaranga novoguineensis, Dichorhopalomyia sp. 4 on Macaranga aleuritoides, Dichorhopalomyia sp. 5 on Macaranga aleuritoides, Gonorhopalomyia gen. nov. (Lasiopteridi: Dasineurini), Gonorhopalomyia guwungguwungo sp. nov. on Psychotria micrococca, Psychotria multicostata and Psychotria murmurensis (Rubiaceae), Hapsirhopalomyia gen. nov. (Lasiopteridi: Dasineurini), Hapsirhopalomyia boik sp. nov. on Psychotria micrococca and Psychotria murmurensis, Hapsirhopalomyia sp. on Psychotria micralabastra, Lekythomyia gen. nov. (Lasiopteridi: Dasineurini), Lekythomyia guun sp. nov. on Nauclea tenuiflora and Nauclea sp. (Rubiaceae), Lekythomyia ingae sp. nov. on Nauclea tenuiflora and Nauclea sp., Lekythomyia sersylinae sp. nov. on Nauclea tenuiflora, Lekythomyia barnabasi sp. nov. on Nauclea tenuiflora and Nauclea sp., Loborhopalomyia gen. nov. (Lasiopteridi: Dasineurini), Loborhopalomyia homno sp. nov. on Saurauia poolei (Actinidiaceae), Loborhopalomyia wakwakgo sp. nov. on Saurauia schumanniana, Plesiorhopalomyia gen. nov. (Lasiopteridi: Dasineurini), Plesiorhopalomyia maiyai sp. nov. on Saurauia poolei, Pseudasphondylia tongo sp. nov. on Steganthera ilicifolia (Monimiaceae), Schizomyia weno sp. nov. on Cypholophus sp. (Urticaceae), Schizomyia udut sp. nov. on Debregeasia longifolia (Urticaceae) and Cypholophus macrocephalus, Tonsepomyia gen. nov. (Asphondyliini: Schizomyiina), Tonsepomyia kondofofo sp. nov. on Neuburgia corynocarpa (Loganiaceae), Yawanomyia gen. nov. (Lasiopteridi: Dasineurini), Yawanomyia ubii sp. nov. on Nauclea sp. and Nauclea tenuiflora. Two monotypic genera are erected to contain previously described species from a lowland forest in Papua New Guinea: Cheirhopalomyia gen. nov. (Lasiopteridi: Dasineurini) for Rhopalomyia psychotriae Kolesik, and Cryptoschizomyia gen. nov. (Asphondyliini: Schizomyiina) for Schizomyia novoguineensis Kolesik. All new taxa are attributed to Kolesik & Butterill. Currently 22 formally described gall midges from 17 genera of Cecidomyiidae are known to occur on the island of Papua New Guinea. A key to genera based on adult morphology is provided with references to described species and their hosts. Listed are species of potential economic importance, either as pests of crops and locally utilized plants, or as biological control agents of crop pests.
