dataset for Behavioural and neuroendocrine correlates of swimming exercise choice in juvenile Atlantic salmon
Résumé fourni par la source
Behavioural, endocrine and neurochemical data from an exercise-choice experiment in juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). Schools of fish were given free access to a flowing-water zone and a calm zone in a choice arena, under two conditions: control, with the flow motor off so both zones were calm, and exercise choice, with the motor on so the fish chose whether to swim against a current. Sixteen trials — four holding tanks × four school sizes (4, 8, 12, 16 fish), eight trials per condition — were each scored in three successive within-trial intervals, giving 48 trial × interval observations. Treatment was counterbalanced, so it is exactly orthogonal to trial order, testing day, holding tank, holding density and motor configuration. Behaviour was measured on the school rather than on individual fish, and the school is the unit of inference throughout. The record contains fourteen reported behavioural outcomes at interval level — zone preference as additive log-ratios across a velocity gradient, engagement with the flow (flow–calm crossings, bout rate, longest and mean bout durations), and collective movement (nearest-neighbour distance, inter-individual distance, school area, school speed) — together with the raw zone-occupancy proportions they are computed from, so every transformation can be recomputed or replaced. Plasma cortisol was quantified in 80 sampled fish by enzyme immunoassay, and brain monoamines (5-HT, 5-HIAA, DA, DOPAC and their turnover ratios) in 37 of those fish across four regions: dorsomedial pallium, preoptic area, and the ventral and dorsal parts of the ventral telencephalon. Deposited as four tidy CSV tables — a subject table that links the cortisol and monoamine sample identifiers, a trial × interval behavioural table, plasma cortisol, and long-format monoamines — plus a machine-readable data dictionary covering every column of every file, and the source workbook as a provenance copy. Missing values carry an explicit reason code. Analysis code is deposited separately.
