The Impact of Strategic Capabilities on Manufacturer’s Productivity: A Conceptual Review

The productivity of manufacturing companies across the globe has been of concerns despite the importance of the sector to economic development. The poor productivity that has greeted these companies has led to questioning whether strategic capabilities dimensions: managerial capabilities, innovation capabilities, technological capabilities, marketing capabilities and human resources capabilities could be of influence in boosting productivity. The study therefore seeks to examine the role strategic capabilities plays in boosting productivity of manufacturing companies. The study adopts the qualitative approach by reviewing recent studies on strategic capabilities dimensions and productivity. The study used over 50 articles with over 60 authors from high-impact journals to explore the possibility of strategic capabilities dimensions having a role in improving productivity. The study theoretical review includes the resource base view, dynamic capability theory and the stakeholder theory. The outcome of the study shows that strategic capabilities dimensions have a significant impact on the productivity of manufacturing organizations. The study recommended that management of manufacturing companies, should invest in modern technology, skills and capabilities.
