Abstract Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are widely employed in industrial and agricultural applications due to their distinctive physico-chemical properties and the possibility of surface functionalization. However, the increasing production of these materials has raised concerns regarding their unintended release into the environment and potential ecological risks. In this study, citrate and L-Cysteine-functionalized AgNPs (AgNPs-cit-L-Cys) were synthesized and characterized. To assess their impact on plant health, garden cress seeds ( Lepidium sativum L.) - a standard OECD bioindicator - were exposed to different concentrations of these nanoparticles in Petri dishes. The results indicated that AgNPs-cit-L-Cys did not affect seed germination, whereas a significant increase in primary root length was observed at 20 mg/L. In addition, silver (Ag) uptake was evaluated. Overall, these findings contribute to a better understanding of the phytotoxic effects of AgNPs and their role in early plant development.
