Selection of parental pairs in accordance with the objectives set by the selection program in peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) variety type Valencia

A study was conducted on important morpho-physiological parameters of peanuts of the Valencia variety type in the working collection of the Institute of Plant Genetic Resources – Sadovo, Bulgaria. Samples and varieties from the local gene pool, from Africa, Asia, South and North America were studied. The genetic distance of these samples, the genetic nature of the studied indicators and the possibility of their inclusion in hybridization were established. The correct selection of parental pairs will allow the realization of hybrid offspring with high variability and the achievement of the goals set for the program. Hybrid offspring should have a reduced vegetative mass, which will limit transpiration and high yield potential.
