Assessing the stability of grain yield in indigenous maize landraces (Zea mays L.) cultivated in Southern Bulgaria

The aim of this study was to assess the stability of grain yield in 15 maize (Zea mays L.) landraces, and to identify genotypes suitable for breeding programs base on sixteen phenotypic stability parameters. AMMI stability value (ASV), yield stability index (YSI) and genotype selection index were computed. The analysis of variance for maize productivity (t/ha) indicated significant differences between year, genotypes and their interaction. Year played the largest role in trait expression, following from genotype X year interaction. The genotypes A8E0561 and A9E0733 were identified as the most stable for both parametric and non-parametric yield stability estimates. ASV analysis determined that A9E0625, A9E0733, A8E0561, and A9E0660 were the most stable genotypes. According to YSI classification, genotypes A9E0660, A8E0561, and A9E0257 were high yielding and stable, making them suitable for cultivation under different environmental conditions. GSI analysis indicated that A8E0561, A9E0660, A9E0625, and A9E0733 had the broadest adaptability to adverse climatic conditions, and are appropriate as starting material in maize breeding programs.
