AI-Enabled Virtual Human to Enhance Cultural Competency in the Construction Industry

The US construction industry has experienced significant demographic shifts with increasing Hispanic workforce representation. However, Hispanic construction workers face disproportionate fatal injury risks compared to non-Hispanic workers, primarily attributed to inadequate communication between workers and managers who often overlook language barriers and cultural differences. This research introduces an Artificial Intelligent (AI) conversational avatar designed to simulate culturally nuanced interactions with Hispanic workers. Construction Science (CS) students engaged with the avatar through realistic job-site scenarios reflecting common cultural challenges. The intervention utilized a mixed-methods design combining qualitative transcript analysis and quantitative post-test surveys to assess the system’s effectiveness towards cultural competency development. This pilot study establishes the feasibility of the tool; subsequent research will include larger samples to rigorously assess effectiveness. These preliminary results demonstrate the platform’s effectiveness in measuring and enhancing cultural competency. Participants showed progressive improvement in cultural awareness and knowledge across successive interactions, with transcript scores increasing from baseline levels of 3.3–4.7 in both competency factors. Post-test responses indicated strong positive reception regarding platform usability and scenario realism. This research provides evidence for leveraging conversational AI to personalize learning and address critical gaps in construction education, offering a scalable solution for preparing future managers to navigate diverse workplace environments effectively.
