"Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence" – proactively evidencing research software impact

As RSEs, at some point we may need to provide evidence that our software actually has some effect on the world. Whether this is for career progression, the REF, just for your own peace of mind, collecting usage data takes many forms but can often come as an afterthought. In this talk we’ll look at how we can plan to collect some evidence to demonstrate the value of our work and hopefully mitigate some potential future stumbling blocks in our career progression. Whilst there are a number of useful post hoc forms of evidence such as GitHub stars, package registry or other download statistics – this talk will concentrate on being proactive in our approach to gathering evidence and how, by doing so, the quality and insights gained can be significant. We’ll go through the pros and cons of different methods for different types of software, think about the different timescales involved and some of the pitfalls and considerations we need to make. From the highly technical, such as integrating telemetry; to the financial, gathering figures of grant funded research which is supported; or the personal, obtaining testimonial evidence, simply planning ahead can be valuable in the long run.
