Understanding Genetically Modified Citrus Buffers Through Gene Flow in an Open Pollinated Field Study

The safe deployment of genetically engineered citrus requires evaluation of pollen-mediated gene flow to ensure environmental and regulatory compliance. We assessed the potential movement of the ‘D4E1’ transgene from transgenic ‘US-802::D4E1’ trees to the monoembryonic, self-incompatible cultivar US SunGlo under field conditions in Fort Pierce, FL. Flowering overlap between 104 transgenic and 26 ‘US Sunglo’ trees was monitored, and seeds from open-pollinated ‘US SunGlo’ fruit located 324 to 365 m (1063 to 1168 ft) from the nearest transgenic tree were screened for the ‘D4E1’ using a TaqMan quantitative polymerase chain reaction assay. A total of 96 seeds were tested, and none contained the transgene. These results indicate no pollen-mediated transgene movement across distances as short as 324 m (1063 ft) and suggest current regulatory buffer requirements for transgenic citrus may be conservative.
