Pithoascus Arx, Proc. K. Ned. Akad. Wet., Ser. C, Biol. Med. Sci. 76 (3): 295 (1973) Notes. Pithoascus was introduced by Arx (1973) and typified by P. nidicola. Species of Pithoascus have been reported from various habitats, including plants, soil, human skin, and nails (Tazik et al. 2020). The sexual morph is characterized by globose ascomata, gregarious, immersed or superficial, often aggregated on dense crusts. The peridium is black and composed of thick-walled, flattened cells (textura angularis), with an inconspicuous ostiole or a short neck. Asci are unitunicate, 8 - spored, and broadly clavate to barrel-shaped. Ascospores are unicellular, asymmetrical (navicular, fusiform, or falcate), yellow to honey-colored, and dextrinoid when young (Arx 1973; Jagielski et al. 2016; Sandoval-Denis et al. 2016). The asexual morph is characterized by annellidic conidiogenous cells borne laterally on hyphae, producing solitary, unicellular, globose to pyriform conidia with a truncate base (Sandoval-Denis et al. 2016). The genus currently comprises six species, and phylogenetic analyses based on ITS, LSU, and tef 1 - α sequences indicate considerable genetic distance among P. ater, P. exsertus, P. lunatus, P. nidicola, P. persica, and P. stoveri (Tazik et al. 2020). In the present study, we introduce Pithoascus cavernicola as a new species, representing the third known species of Pithoascus isolated from cave environments, following P. ater (Zach) Sand. - Den., Cano & Guarro and P. platysporus Arx & Veenb. - Rijks (Suppl. material 1: table S 2).
