Maximum Spherical Mean Value (mSMV) filtering. mSMV removes residual harmonic background field near the brain boundary — the main source of QSM shadow artifacts — via the maximum-value corollary of Green's theorem, preserving the edge of the brain WITHOUT eroding the mask. It is normally a refinement applied after a primary background-field removal; here it is packaged as a self-contained total->local BFR using the upstream function's prefilter=1 mode, which first performs a Spherical Mean Value (SMV) primary background removal (RDF - SMV(RDF), radius mm) and then the mSMV boundary shadow correction. So this submission is the composition SMV + mSMV. The field is converted ppm->rad for filtering (mSMV's threshold is defined in radians) and back to ppm on output. The vessel-mask step (which needs an R2* map) is skipped, per upstream behaviour when R2* is unavailable. Compiled from MATLAB and run on the license-free MATLAB Runtime.
