Electronic enhancement for control of loudness in a concert hall

We present the design concept for a new concert hall at the University of Florida tailored to host large and powerful ensembles (up to 200 pieces), while accommodating only a modest audience size of 500 seats. The challenge lies in creating an acoustical environment that avoids excessive loudness without sacrificing reverberation, especially given the limited physical volume available. The hall area that results from the occupancy is such that the room would require an excessively high roof deck (90 ft above the stage platform) in order to incorporate the volume needed for adequate control of loudness (around 650000 cubic feet). Constructing such a tall room to compensate for the limited floor area is often not feasible due to the high costs involved and concerns with the visual aesthetics of such a tall building. In this presentation, we describe our approach to the design of the hall to accommodate the loudest ensembles with the enhancement system, as well as more modest ensembles, which will still have the option to use the natural acoustics of the room. Our approach integrates (passive) adjustable acoustic absorption with an (active) electronic acoustic enhancement system to provide good playing conditions for all ensembles.
