Eosinopenia as a Marker of Sepsis and Mortality in Intensive Care Unit patients

Background: Sepsis is one of the most common causes of mortality and morbidity in the intensive care unit. Despite continuing advances in diagnosis and treatment, sepsis remains one of the important causes of higher mortality and morbidity. Purpose: This study was done to evaluate eosinopenia as a marker of sepsis and mortality in intensive care unit patients. Materials and methods: This cross sectional study was carried out in the Department of Clinical Pathology in collaboration with Department of Anaesthesia, Analgesia and Intensive care Medicine and Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Bangladesh Medical University, Dhaka. Observations and Results: Study population was 74 patients selected from intensive care unit, BMU. The sensitivity and specificity of AEC for diagnosis of sepsis was 73% and 62% respectively which was obtained by ROC curve. The area under ROC curve was 0.765 in current study. AEC decreased in patients who died due to sepsis. In infection group the mean AEC was20±11.4 cells/cumm in survivors and 9.2± 9.3 in died. In non infection group the mean AEC was140.0±57.7cells/cumm in survivors and 48.0±16.3 in died. Conclusion: This present data revealed that decreased AEC was significantly associated with sepsis and mortality. Chest Heart J. 2025; 49(1) : 10-14
