Acoustical and musical factors shaping steelpan and handpan performance practices

Cross-cultural adaptations of steelpans have occurred worldwide, covering many musical styles and traditions, along with the adaptation of the handpan and related instruments. The steelpan originated on the island of Trinidad in the middle of the 20th century. Since its development, the steelpan family has spread all over the world and across multiple musical genres. The steelpan can be played as a solo instrument, but ensembles of steelpans are common and can range from duets to steelbands comprised of dozens of pannists performing together. In recent decades, another musical instrument made of steel, the handpan, has grown in popularity. This instrument, although related to the steelpan, is notably different in its musical usage. While the handpan can be heard around the globe, the musical genres typically performed on it are not as varied as those performed on the steelpan. Similarly, while the handpan can be played in an ensemble, it is more typically performed by a soloist. There are acoustical and musical features of these instruments that contribute to their distinctly different usages.
