Economics of Briquetting Industry for Environment, Energy, Rural and Women Entrepreneurs’ Sustainable Development of India

This chapter presents a study on the scope of using agricultural waste or industrial bio-waste in the briquetting industry in India, to promote economic growth in rural communities. The other aspect presented is the study on the energy potential of bio-waste in the form of briquettes to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. This chapter also helps in analyzing the potential for CO2 trading in the international market. The industrial and household applications of these products help in potential savings in petroleum products for transporting biomass in India. This chapter identifies savings opportunities in the form of economies of scale in industrial energy consumption patterns. There is scope for women’s entrepreneurship in rural areas of India in the briquetting industry; the need is only for capacity building. Microfinance and green financing schemes can help establish small- and medium-scale industries in rural areas by women for sustainable development.
