Bycatch of endangered, threatened, and protected (ETP) species and catch depredation remain major challenges for gillnet and longline fisheries. Fish pots could provide a more sustainable alternative due to their low bycatch risk and their potential to mitigate depredation. Although fish pot designs have been optimized for round-bodied species such as Atlantic cod ( Gadus morhua ) and Pacific cod ( Gadus macrocephalus ), their effectiveness for flatfish remains largely unknown. This is especially relevant for the Baltic Sea, with Baltic cod stocks in decline. This study investigated how flatfish interact with pot entrances, employing European plaice ( Pleuronectes platessa ) as a model species. Behavioural trials in a net-pen were conducted to observe plaice interacting with different pot entrance designs. Specifically, we examined how entrance design parameters - position, size, and the presence and position of a funnel - affect plaice entry and exit rates. Entrance position played a key role, with low entrances near the seabed facilitating entry, while higher entrances reduced exit probability. Entrance size had little effect, as increasing the vertical dimension did not enhance fish interaction. Funnels did not appear to elicit avoidance behaviour; although the true funnel configuration reduced the number of entries, it also reduced the number of exits. This study provides mechanistic insight into flatfish behavioural responses to pot entrances and identifies key design principles for developing more efficient and selective pot fisheries targeting flatfish.
