Allision Risk between Large Ships and US Bridges

This project contains scripts and data used for a comprehensive large vessel allision vulnerability assessment of all bridges across the United States. We were motivated by the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, and implemented the vulnerability assessment methodology prescribed by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (Method II). We begin with all bridges in the 2025 National Bridge Inventory, and apply several filters to eliminate bridges which cannot physically see large ship traffic. Afterwards, we calculated traffic estimations for each bridge using ship data from Marine Cadastre. It was cleaned by removing ships which were too small or which moved impossibly fast. A rough traffic estimation revealed 357 bridges which could be at-risk; the coordinates representing the starts and ends of these bridges were found manually. During this manual inspection, some of bridges were eliminated for various reasons (e.g. too small to permit large ship traffic). This leaves 224 bridges, which underwent a thorough traffic assessment. We performed a conservative risk assessment for these bridges and, after collecting the piers and pier protections for those which passed initial conservative estimations, left 54 bridges with a return period of allision less than 1000 years.
