The picture stone from Stabu on Toten I: contribution to an archaeological discussion The Merovingian-period picture stone from Stabu on Toten, a prosperous agricultural district in the inner part of southeastern Norway, is unique in a Norwegian context as it represents the only find of its type, i.e.\ a stone with carved figures and no runic inscription. Even in a wider geographical perspective, it is difficult to point to contemporary parallels or forerunners to the Stabu stone, although picture stones were found both in western Norway, Sweden and in Germany. In this paper the dating of the carved images is assessed, and the social and local context of the picture stone from Stabu is explored. The images are defined as Salin's Style II, and I argue that details in the ornamentation point towards an absolute dating around AD 550/600–650/700. I further argue that this unique picture stone is the product of an innovative and creative environment characterized by both long-distance social networks and skillful crafters.
