The Arabic version of the Brief Self-Control Scale (BSCS): psychometric validation and correlations with positive and negative mental health indicators among adolescents
Résumé fourni par la source
The aim of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of the Arabic translation of the Brief Self-Control Scale (BSCS). The sample consisted of 793 Lebanese adolescents (mean age: 16.08 ± 1.74 years, and 62.4% females), selected through a snowball sampling technique to participate in this cross-sectional study. The fit indices of the one-factor model were good after removing items 1, 9, 12 and 13. The reliability coefficients were very good. Higher mean BSCS scores were found in females compared to males. In terms of concurrent validity, higher BSCS-9 scores were significantly associated with better well-being (r = 0.11; p = 0.002) and a stronger perception of meaning in life (r = 0.15; p < 0.001), whereas higher BSCS-9 scores were associated with lower psychological distress (r = –0.30; p < 0.001) and less irritability (r = –0.20; p < 0.001). To further evaluate the scale's construct validity, additional studies should explore and verify the one-dimensional, 9-item BSCS in other Arabic speaking populations, with a focus on confirming its validity in broader and diverse groups.
