Evaluation of driving forces for Hainan's natural rubber industry: Integrating endogenous capacity and policy-market enablers

Taking Hainan Province as the study area and based on an evaluation index system, this study used principal component analysis (PCA) to measure the driving forces of industrial development from 2010 to 2024, and employed stepwise regression to identify core contributors. The driving forces of Hainan’s natural rubber industry exhibit a clear rise-then-decline pattern. Three principal components (market/policy drivers, production/trade foundation, and R&D input) were identified, with a cumulative variance contribution rate of 80.949%. The proportion of industrial employees and planting coverage intensity were identified as core contributors, jointly explaining 0.970 of the variance, indicating a dual-wheel drive of labor and land. Enhancing driving forces hinges on consolidating labor and land. By stabilizing the tapper workforce, optimizing planting layouts, and strengthening targeted policy support, the industry's drivers can be activated, promoting high-quality development of China's natural rubber industry while safeguarding national supply security.
