EnvStretcher: reproducible geometric remapping of gridded environmental forcing for marine ecosystem models

EnvStretcher is an open-source Python utility for transferring gridded environmental data between geographically distinct raster domains using piecewise affine transformations. The software combines control-point-based mapping, Delaunay or user-defined triangulations, affine coordinate transformations and NaN-aware bilinear interpolation to generate reproducible environmental forcing for ecosystem models. A two-stage workflow separates geometric calibration from raster processing by precomputing a reusable mapping matrix, enabling efficient processing of large environmental time series. The modular software architecture allows alternative interpolation and triangulation methods to be incorporated with minimal changes to the overall workflow. Built-in diagnostics and GIS exports facilitate verification of mapping quality.The software is demonstrated by transferring environmental forcing from an Earth System Model domain to a long-established educational marine ecosystem model.EnvStretcher complements rather than replaces conventional statistical or dynamical downscaling approaches. It enables reproducible generation of hypothetical environmental forcing for teaching models, proof-of-concept studies and other applications where suitable environmental datasets are unavailable.
