Model-based systems engineering progress for the Gemini North Adaptive Optics Bench in critical design phase

The Gemini North Adaptive Optics Bench (AOB) is a key opto-mechanical subsystem of the Gemini North Adaptive Optics (GNAO) facility and has recently completed Critical Design Review (CDR), positioning the project to enter the Build Phase. This paper reports the technical systems engineering progress that enabled CDR success, with emphasis on requirements decomposition and traceability, interface management across a geographically distributed consortium, and maturation of verification and validation planning. Central to the approach is a SysML-based Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) implementation in which the system model serves as the authoritative source for requirements, operational concepts, architecture, and internal/external interface definition. The model-centric workflow has strengthened requirement-to-architecture traceability, supported generation and consistency of interface documentation, and improved visibility of integration and compliance risks during design maturation. We summarise the project’s verification strategy and governing plans (including integration/ verification and acceptance testing), and conclude with remaining activities and lessons learned in applying MBSE within a complex astronomical instrumentation program.
