Sundanese–Indonesian Bilingualism and Diglossia Among Non-Literary Faculty Students at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia

The dominance of Indonesian in academic domains has narrowed the functional space of regional languages, including Sundanese, among young speakers. This study analyzes Sundanese–Indonesian bilingualism and diglossia among non-literary faculty students at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia by examining bilingual proficiency and language use patterns across academic and informal communication domains. A quantitative approach with a descriptive survey design was employed. Data were collected through a questionnaire from 28 non-literary faculty students with contact with Sundanese. The questionnaire measured self-rated proficiency in understanding, speaking, reading, writing, and the use of undak usuk basa Sunda on a five-point Likert scale, as well as the frequency of Sundanese, Indonesian, and mixed-language use across domains. The results indicate that receptive proficiency was higher than productive proficiency, with the highest mean score recorded for understanding daily conversations (4.29), while the lowest scores were found for the use of undak usuk basa Sunda (3.32) and writing (3.46). Indonesian dominated the academic domain, being used by 19 respondents in interactions with lecturers and 21 respondents when discussing academic topics, whereas mixed language was more frequent in informal communication, casual conversations (17 respondents) and personal topics (20 respondents).
