A scoping review of research-creation and practice-based research: definitions, claimed benefits, and integration within other methodologies, across health and social-science contexts.

Research-creation (the term institutionalised in Canada, e.g. through SSHRC) and practice-based research (the term used more in the EU) name overlapping approaches in which research questions are explored through creative practice. The terminology is fragmented across regions and disciplines, and the literature is scattered and often housed in books rather than indexed journals. This review maps how these approaches are defined, what benefits are claimed for them, and how they are combined with, or “nested” within, other methodologies. The immediate purpose is to inform the nesting of research-creation within a mixed-methods ethnography, and to document benefits usable across both a health framing (individual and structural/social determinants of health; CIHR) and a social-science framing (SSHRC).
