Australia and the Regional Dynamics in the South and East China Seas
Résumé fourni par la source
Motivated by a deteriorating strategic environment in which statecraft is being dominated by coercion and the use of force, Australia released a defence strategy in 2024 that seeks to strengthen its military to achieve deterrence by denial. With a focus on maritime capabilities and long-range strike weapons to defeat projection against Australian territory, the nation&s;s military will be enabled by a more capable surface fleet and a commitment to nuclear-powered submarines. The defence strategy, which was updated in 2026, has received both praise for taking a systemic and logical approach to mitigating security risks and criticism for investment programmes not being funded to move at the pace needed. Air power has not been seen as a high priority, but fortunately, Australia&s;s Air Force is well equipped and prepared and will continue to be a key contributor to deterrence especially in the near term.
