Socio-Economic Status of Single Female-Headed Households and the “Street Children” Phenomenon in South Africa

The crisis of street children has become not only a local but also a global phenomenon. This issue reflects persistent socio-economic inequalities and family structural challenges that heighten children's vulnerability. This study explores the relationship between the socio-economic status of female single-parent households and the street children phenomenon in North-West Province of South Africa. The study employed a qualitative method. Using purposive sampling, in-depth interviews were conducted with 15 children, and 15 of their parents. Making it a total of 30 participants. Data was thematically analysed. The findings revealed that most children came from female single-parent households. Structural marginalization, unemployment, and resource constraints within these households were major push factors leading children to street life. The study recommends that targeted policies and interventions should be implemented to support female-headed single-parent households, thereby reducing poverty and preventing children from turning to the streets.
