Evaluation of sexual function according to age in women referred to urogynaecology clinics
Résumé fourni par la source
OBJECTIVE: Sex can be an important aspect of life with no upper age limit; however, research into sexual function in older women is limited. This multi-centre study aims to assess the relationship between age and sexual activity/function, in women attending urogynaecology clinics. STUDY DESIGN: Data collected using the validated electronic Personal Assessment Questionnaire - Pelvic Floor patient reported outcome measure were collated from seven public UK Hospitals between April 2018 and January 2022. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary outcome was the proportion of sexually active women in each age group category. Secondary outcomes were symptom scores and impact factor scores for domains of sexual function, and their correlation with age. RESULTS: < .001). In the majority of sexual function domains, peak symptom and impact scores were found in women aged 40-59. 'Body Image' peak scores were observed in women aged 30-39. Mean scores for both symptom frequency and impact in all domains decreased with increasing age ≥60 years. CONCLUSIONS: Sexual activity declines with increasing age but this is not associated with increased sexual dysfunction scores in those who remain sexually active. Impaired sexual function is more commonly reported in women aged 40-60, likely reflecting the impact of the menopause. Further research is required to better understand reasons for cessation of sexual activity and identify patients who have treatable causes of sexual dysfunction.
