AI-Enhanced Adaptive Learning for the Future of STEM Education

Adaptive learning has existed in education for many years, as educators adjust teaching methods to meet individual student needs. The evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming adaptive learning, enabling systems to continuously analyze learning behaviors and track students' performance. AI can include different techniques and tools within the educational technology domain, for example Machine Learning (ML), Deep Learning and Natural Language Processing (NLP) are usually used to improve learning experiences like analyzing students' data, predicting learning risks, students advising as well as personalizing learning activities for each student's needs. Despite making adaptive learning more effective and dynamic, there is still uncertainty about how these technologies can improve STEM learning outcomes and how to design them for diverse learners. This chapter highlights AI tools for enhancing adaptive learning and explores the associated challenges and opportunities, illustrated with some of real-world applications integrating AI in Adaptive Learning.
