The Impact of Project Management on Project Sustainability in the Construction Industry of the UK
Résumé fourni par la source
This research investigates the impact of project management practices on project sustainability within the UK construction industry, with particular emphasis on waste management and energy efficiency. The construction sector represents a significant contributor to the UK economy, comprising approximately 6% of GDP and employing 2.2 million individuals, yet it also generates substantial environmental, social, and economic impacts. Through a qualitative research approach grounded in interpretivism, this study employed semi-structured interviews with five industry professionals, including construction site managers, sustainability consultants, construction engineers, project managers, and project leads. Thematic analysis of interview data revealed that sustainable project management practices significantly enhance project outcomes across multiple dimensions. Findings demonstrate that effective waste management strategies, including segregation, recycling programs, and waste tracking systems, reduce disposal costs, minimize environmental impact, and streamline site operations. Similarly, energy efficiency measures such as Building Information Modeling (BIM), energy audits, smart metering, and renewable energy integration contribute to reduced operational costs, improved building performance, and enhanced regulatory compliance. The research identifies both opportunities and challenges in implementing sustainable practices, including initial investment costs, training requirements, and organizational commitment. The study concludes that sustainability integration within project management frameworks improves productivity, client satisfaction, and market competitiveness while delivering long-term economic and environmental benefits. Recommendations include enhanced policy support, increased investment in sustainable technologies, and comprehensive training programs to develop sustainability competencies among construction professionals.
