Perceived satisfaction of outpatients undergoing endoscopic examination: cross-sectional observational study.

Background Patient satisfaction is a key quality indicator in gastrointestinal endoscopy, influencing adherence, service improvement, and overall care experience.This study aimed to assess determinants of satisfaction among outpatients undergoing gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study at the Digestive Endoscopy Service of a university hospital in Italy. Outpatients undergoing esophagogastroduodenoscopy, colonoscopy, or endoscopic ultrasound completed the Endoscopy Customer Satisfaction Questionnaire and the Perceived Stress Scale. Relevant sociodemographic and clinical data were collected. Statistical analyses included ANOVA, t-tests, Pearson's correlation, and multiple linear regression. Results A total of 203 outpatients were enrolled. Patient satisfaction was high. Satisfaction significantly correlated with healthcare professionals' competence, particularly nurses. Interaction between nurse and endoscopist expertise notably influenced satisfaction. Gender, previous surgeries, bowel preparation timing, nurse competency, examination duration, and time spent in the endoscopy room significantly predicted satisfaction. Perceived stress did not significantly affect satisfaction. Conclusions Nursing and medical expertise are crucial in shaping endoscopic patient satisfaction. Enhanced communication, reduced waiting times, and optimized procedural factors may improve patient experiences. Future research should explore strategies to increase satisfaction and adherence to follow-up procedures.
