This chapter examines the methodological evolution of news media trust measurement, and reviews the benefits and pitfalls of different measurement approaches. The authors argue that the field is frequently hindered by a lack of conceptual clarity – often conflating trust, credibility, and trustworthiness – and a persistent failure to specify the object of trust. In today&s;s high-choice environment, generalized survey measures may suffer from negative accessibility bias, where respondents recall their least favorite sources rather than their actual news diets. Other findings demonstrate, in contrast, that respondents average across all mainstream sources when forming their general evaluations of the news media&s;s trustworthiness. Given that the different media trust measures often lead to similar results, and given that not enough research has been dedicated to comparing the performance of the different measures, it is impossible to point to a superior measurement approach. To address these contradictions and challenges, the chapter advocates for greater topical specificity and the integration of qualitative and mixed-methods approaches.
