Résumé fourni par la source

New Amsterdam, the capital of Region 6, Guyana, experiences recurrent flooding during periods of intense rainfall despite the presence of gravity drainage sluices and recently installed drainage pumps. However, unlike Georgetown, no published study has quantitatively evaluated the hydraulic capacity and drainage performance of the municipality’s drainage system. This study addresses that knowledge gap through field investigations, hydraulic analysis, and examination of historical rainfall and flood records. Field measurements were obtained at the town’s five gravity sluices and two permanent drainage pumps, including sluice dimensions, water depths, operating conditions, and evidence of siltation. The hydraulic capacity of each sluice was calculated using a unified Sluice Drainage Coefficient Equation derived from the Chezy-Manning equation and the rainfall drainage coefficient relationship.
