Validation of the Rosenberg’s self-esteem scale in Bangladeshi married women

Self-esteem is one of the most essential attributes for the mental, social, and economic well-being of women, yet there are insufficient validated scales for measuring it in Bangladesh. This study aims to develop a culturally appropriate and psychometrically sound version of the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) for married women of reproductive age (15–49) residing in Dhaka city, Bangladesh. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data from 625 women in Dhaka City, Bangladesh. The World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines were followed to translate and adapt the Bangla version of the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES-BV). This study employs the Graded Response Model (GRM) within Item Response Theory (IRT) to evaluate the psychometric properties of the RSES-BV, which is tailored for women aged 15 to 49. Analysis includes mean inter-item correlations, item-total correlations (CITC), and internal consistency reliability. The factor structure of the scale was examined using both exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. Exploratory factor analysis revealed a single-factor structure with 10 items, accounting for 69.32% of the total variance. Confirmatory factor analysis supported this factor structure (CFI = 0.980, TLI = 0.971, RMSEA = 0.053, SRMR = 0.015). Item analysis indicated that the items had satisfactory discrimination indices. Additionally, the scale demonstrated good internal consistency (α = 0.884). The RSES-BV is a reliable and valid instrument for measuring self-esteem among married women aged 15–49 residing in Dhaka City. It would help researchers and psychologists in similar socio-economic and linguistic settings. This study may provide an opportunity for future researchers to validate the RSES-BV for rural, unmarried adolescents, older women, or socioeconomically diverse populations.
