Aimé Césaire has a fundamental intellectual, literary, and socio-political relationship with America. This relationship was shaped by his discovery of African American writers such as Sterling Brown, Countee Cullen, Langston Hughes, and Claude McKay, as well as by the exchange of ideas between Africa, the Caribbean, and the United States. In his work, America appears as a place where Black consciousness awakens, marked by both racial injustice and the strong desire for freedom and human dignity. This article offers a brief overview of Césaire’s interest in the writers of the Harlem Renaissance, the reception of his work in the United States, and his vision of America as a space of contradictions, solidarity, and changing identities.
