Political antecedents and consequences of media trust

This chapter will present the state of the art on how political competencies, attitudes, and behaviors are associated with trust in news media. For that purpose, it will first provide a summary of common interdisciplinary theoretical frameworks, especially culturalist and institutional theories, which explain the relationship between these political variables and news media trust. Next, the chapter will provide an overview on the current state of research: It will depict how the levels of media trust vary depending on individuals’ political competencies, such as political knowledge and self-efficacy. It will address political attitudes, including political orientation and partisanship, populist and extremist attitudes, political involvement, and trust in representative and implementing institutions. It will also consider how political behaviors are related to trust in news media, such as online and offline political participation, civic engagement, and voting behavior.
