Randomised trials occupy a central position in clinical medicine and are widely regarded as a vital source of new data for the causal evaluation of therapeutic interventions in anaesthesia, pain medicine, perioperative and critical care. Treatment decisions applied to individuals and populations are commonly informed by evidence generated by randomised trials, alongside the clinical experience of the treating clinician. Clinicians should therefore be able to not only understand the ‘headline’ results of a trial, but also to assess confidently whether a trial was appropriately designed, whether its results are valid and apply to clinical practice.
