The incidence and factors affecting post-caesarean surgical site infections at a private hospital: A prospective cohort study

Background One-third of all births in Jordan are done by caesarean section, which is almost double the global recommended rate. This continuous increase in caesarean delivery rates has contributed to an increase in surgical site infection (SSI) rate. Objectives To assess the rate of surgical site infection (SSI) after elective caesarean deliveries. Also, we explored the predisposing factors that are associated with these infections. Design we conducted a prospective observational cohort study at Estishari Hospital (EH), a major tertiary hospital in Jordan. Methods A total of 184 women underwent caesarean deliveries between October 2021, and September 2022 were included, and SSI was identified both during the hospital stay and within 30 days after the discharge. Results during the 1-year study period, post-caesarean SSI was detected in 6 (3.3%) of 184 women who underwent caesarean operations. A multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that diabetic women have significantly higher post-caesarean SSI risk compared to their non-diabetic counterpart (OR, 28.7 [95% CI, 2.1-404.2]), (P=0.013). Conclusions Having diabetes was found as an independent predictor of post-caesarean SSI, suggesting that tailored antibiotic prophylaxis may be beneficial for this population. Incorporating diabetes as key risk factor in post-caesarean SSI prevention strategies is essential prevention strategy in improving caesarean patient’s outcomes.
