Chapter 1 considers the 3D trajectory estimation of a civilian aircraft using air traffic control (ATC) two-dimensional (2D) radars used at airports. The 3D motions analyzed are the nearly constant velocity (NCV) motion at nearly constant altitude (NCAlt), climbing with nearly constant climbing rate, and nearly constant turn (NCT) at NCAlt. When an aircraft is in a holding pattern near an airport before landing, it performs an NCT. For the NCV motion at NCAlt, and climbing with nearly constant climbing rate, three height-parametrized (HP) Cartesian filters are used, and their performances are evaluated with the posterior Cramér-Rao lower bound. We take into account the physics of the NCT motion and civil aviation regulations recommended by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) using the bank angle and radius of turn. We use the Itó stochastic differential equation to describe the continuous-time the NCT motion and present two filtering algorithms.
