Recent reports have highlighted the environmental costs of modern agricultural systems in terms of their impact on soil, human and animal health. Viewed through a microbial lens, these changes can be understood as a breakdown of the relationship between humans and microbes arising from intensive industrialised agricultural practice. Conceptualising agriculture as a biosocial practice, this chapter explores how farming practices are shifting in response to changing understandings of the soil and the wider agroecology of the farm, which conceptualise the farm as an ecological system, marked by thresholds, tipping points and different possible system states. It proposes three different bundles of emergent biosocial farming practices – attunement, co-cultivation and collective care – and considers: (i) the extent to which these represent a transformation of farming practice away from an industrialised, intensive norm; (ii) the antecedents of these practices traced to both microbiology and traditional and Indigenous farming systems; and (iii) how microbes act as indices of the ways in which biosocial practices interact at scale, as well as indicators of the implications of these practices for human and environmental health.
