The Marginalisation of Charitable Functions: Confessional Argumentation and the Construction of the Diaconate in a Late Nineteenth-Century Catholic Encyclopaedia
Résumé fourni par la source
Abstract This article examines how a late nineteenth-century Catholic account of the diaconate was shaped through selective emphasis and omission. Focusing on the 1882 encyclopaedia entry Diakon in the Real-Encyklopädie der christlichen Alterthümer , it treats the text as a case study in modern confessional scholarship. The question is therefore not primarily reconstructive, but interpretative: how did a late nineteenth-century Catholic reference work arrange authoritative material to construct a particular ecclesial and confessionally inflected profile of the office? It argues that the entry gives interpretative priority to liturgical, administrative, disciplinary, and representative functions while marginalising charitable ones. This result is achieved not through simple falsification but through selection, compression, placement, and selective silence. Comparison with earlier Catholic and contemporary Protestant reference works shows that substantially overlapping source materials could sustain different models of ministry. The case thus shows how modern confessional scholarship could stabilise ecclesial self-understanding through the selective ordering of inherited authorities.
