Le résumé fourni par la source

The STILES MeerKAT Band 5B project is extending the high-frequency capability of the MeerKAT radio telescope through the deployment of a complete Band 5B observing system comprising 64 cryogenic dual-polarization receivers, dedicated down-converting digitizers, correlator and beamforming capabilities, backend processing resources, monitoring and control functionality, and supporting observatory infrastructure. The project is a collaboration between the Italian National Institute of Astrophysics (INAF) and the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO). Operating over the SKA-Mid Band 5b frequency range, this upgrade will provide MeerKAT with access to 8.3–15.4 GHz observations, establishing the most sensitive high-frequency centimeter-wave interferometric capability in the Southern Hemisphere ahead of full SKA-Mid operations. The project also serves as a precursor for high-frequency capabilities in the SKA era. By equipping the MeerKAT array with a complete Band 5B observing system, the project extends high-frequency access to a telescope that will form an integral part of the future SKA-Mid observatory. This upgrade enhances the scientific potential of MeerKAT in the 8.3 – 15.4 GHz frequency range while establishing a foundation upon which future high-frequency capabilities within the broader SKA-Mid could potentially be built. This paper presents a project-level overview of the MeerKAT Band 5B implementation. It summarizes the scientific motivation, implementation strategy, observatory-wide impacts, current deployment status, and the roadmap toward integration, commissioning, and science operations.
